Haggling/Open Air Market
Although Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to master, and it is impossible to learn any language in one day, China Reflection is offering a “crash haggling course” for those who wish to learn the essentials when trying to get the lowest prices. Learn how to greet people when you first meet. And when people try to trick you by making you pay a higher price for something you wish to buy, it’s always good to know a snappy remark to set them off their guard. Since haggling is something completely alien to most foreigners, it’s good to have some practice with it in the classroom so that you will not be tricked when you want to buy something in the street. Come prepared with your own questions. What do you want to learn how to say? Ask our Chinese teachers, don’t be shy. Since the best way to remember how to speak a language is to actually use the language, we will be visiting an outdoor market about 20 minutes walk from our culture classroom. These markets are a kind of Chinese culture of their own where you can see people and products from all walks off life. They are often the most active and fascinating places to visit, so it’s good to come equipped with a few necessary phrases to make the trip more worthwhile. If enough people join, perhaps we can even have a contest to see who can use their newly found haggling abilities to get the lowest prices and make the salesperson laugh the most.
Because China Reflection is devoted to low impact ecotourism, we have arranged our gathering points near metro stations for your convenience. Despite being overcrowded at times, Beijing has a safe and efficient metro system. By using this system, guests help to support public transportation, as well as having a chance to experience real Beijing from a more environmentally conscious viewpoint. From our meeting points we try to walk, ride bicycles or use public transport as much as possible to get to the final destination.
