Kite Construction

In ancient times, kites were originally regarded as technology in China.  At the same time, people appreciated kites for their artistic value and also viewed them as pieces of art.  Kites first appeared in China around the wars of the Spring and Autumn period (770 BC-476 BC).  It is noted that one carpenter, Lu Ban, even made kites that’s purpose were to fly high and spy on the enemy!  In one ancient story, a Han general (Zhang Liang), ordered his soldiers to fly kites in the fog around the enemy.  Children sitting in the kites played flutes, making the enemy soldiers miss their homes.  They lost the will to fight, scattered, and went back home.  Additionally, kites were also used to send urgent messages.  Today, kites are mostly used for sport and relaxation.  Every year in Fengxian there is an international kite festival.  Join China Reflection and local kite maker to learn how to construct your very own kite that you can take back with you and fly when you return home.

Because China Reflection is devoted to low impact ecotourism, we have arranged our gathering points near metro stations for your convenience.  Despite being overcrowded at times, Beijing has a safe and efficient metro system.  By using this system, guests help to support public transportation, as well as having a chance to experience  real Beijing from a more environmentally conscious viewpoint.  From our meeting points we try to walk, ride bicycles or use public transport as much as possible to get to the final destination.
