Paper Cutting

Paper cutting instructorChinese paper cutting is a distinctly Chinese visual art form that uses scissors, sometimes an engraving knife, and colored paper (red foreground with white background is the most popular) to create a picture.  This art has a 1000 year old history and is still popular as part of Chinese culture today.  One can often see examples of paper cuttings hung in doorways of shops and restaurants.  Professional artists can create astoundingly intricate pictures depicting Chinese characters, historical figures, plants and animals.  It is easy to learn paper cutting but difficult to master.  In our beginner’s class, we will introduce the correct ways to hold the tools, the paper, and create some simple, yet pleasing works of art.  Meet long time enthusiast and paper cutting workshop owner Mr. Zhou in our culture classroom for this introductory course.   You can choose from a selection of simple designs you wish to cut, and at the end of the short course you will have your very own paper cut picture to take back with you.  It’s light and easy to travel with.

Because China Reflection is devoted to low impact ecotourism, we have arranged our gathering points near metro stations for your convenience.  Despite being overcrowded at times, Beijing has a safe and efficient metro system.  By using this system, guests help to support public transportation, as well as having a chance to experience  real Beijing from a more environmentally conscious viewpoint.  From our meeting points we try to walk, ride bicycles or use public transport as much as possible to get to the final destination.
