In China, you can find countless cake shops along the street, each with their own window displaying intricate frosting designs on their cakes. Although not considered traditional Chinese culture, there is something uniquely distinct about the cakes and frosting you find in these shops. If you go to a birthday party you will inevitably find that most of the frosting ends up on people’s faces, rather than in their mouths.
Join a couple from Inner Mongolia who have been in Beijing for 10 years making a living decorating and selling their own cakes. They work at a shop located in Haidian district, not far from Tsinghua University, Beijing’s most academically famed college. They are patient and willing to help first time learners. As you watch them design the frosting flowers with ease, you will be surprised at how difficult it is to do in practice.
This truly unique shadow experience places you in the workplace of family-owned cake designers in Beijing. When you leave, be sure to take a cake home with you, so that you can reap the benefits of your labor, as well as supporting a local business at the same time.
Because China Reflection is devoted to low impact ecotourism, we have arranged our gathering points near metro stations for your convenience. Despite being overcrowded at times, Beijing has a safe and efficient metro system. By using this system, guests help to support public transportation, as well as having a chance to experience real Beijing from a more environmentally conscious viewpoint.
